Brewing Time, Carving Taiwan

— Discovering the quiet, seemingly insignificant moments of beauty in everyday life

Everyday life, often without notice, slowly gathers into unique landscapes. Those moments that appear trivial are precisely what make things what they are. Not everything needs to be praised to be worthy of existence—every memory, once lived, deserves to be kept.

This exhibition begins with land and people. For more than a decade, paper-cut artist Cheng Johan has traveled across Taiwan, listening to stories from streets and alleyways. Through elders’ memories, fleeting light at street corners, and the cultural textures woven into daily life, she carves—cut by cut—each story into paper, allowing layers of light and shadow to unfold across paper works, public art, and the city itself. She has also journeyed to Koganecho, Yokohama, creating works that belong to that place—the beauty that needs no praise.

“Brewing” is the physical trace of time accumulated. The main exhibition, Huashan Brewing Story, draws from the act of brewing to reveal the layered history beneath our feet at Huashan.
“Brewing” is also the prelude to emotional emergence. In Paper-Cut: A Hundred Views of Taiwan, years of creation come together, each cut in paper quietly fermenting the artist’s feelings for this land.
“Brewing” happens slowly. In Public Art in the City and Works from Yokohama, Japan, these creations step into cities and distant lands, continuing to ferment with people and space within the flow of everyday life.

Time brews its countless drops; the heart, in turn, carves every moment of seeing.

Cheng Johan

Papercutting / Installation ArtistBorn in 1988 in Taipei, Taiwan, Cheng Johan is a self-taught artist who entered the world of papercutting after graduating from university.

She walks, observes, creates, and feels with an open heart—capturing the warmth and stories of the land through her eyes and hands. Her works, titled Papercut Landscapes of Taiwan, portray the heartfelt everyday scenes of a post-80s girl.

Through delicate lines and meticulous details, she depicts the faces of people, the corners of streets, and the textures of daily life—intuitively translating the impressions and emotions each place leaves in her mind.

She believes that art grows within life, and beauty is essential to living. By bringing papercutting into cities and onto the streets, she tells the stories of “home” through light, shadow, and space. In recent years, she has also begun creating video works to share the artistic essence of everyday living.
